Background
This client carried out a national feasibility study at over 40 of their leisure sites to assess the suitability of using ground source heat pump technology. Following these studies, 15 sites were earmarked for immediate suitability. Key drivers were cost-effective heating and the removal of LPG from these remote sites. In addition, air quality and humidity were of paramount importance due to the swimming pool facilities and historic performance issues with existing equipment. High efficiency and ease of maintenance were also high on their wish list. The client was also keen to ensure that any new system would provide a full heating, cooling, heat recovery and ventilation system and would increase overall performance. Due to occupancy requirements, the system would need to be capable of operating from February through to November with little or no downtime.
The Solution
IPT designed and installed a 400kW GeoCube ground source heat pump, with full heat recovery, passive cooling, active cooling and separate OptiRad air handling units (AHUs) for the swimming pool and changing areas. The project was fully managed by IPT and delivered on time and in budget.
System Performance
In addition to providing a cost-effective heating, cooling, heat recovery and ventilation solution, the GeoCube system has also been designed to run for the continuous hours associated with a modern leisure facility. Integration with the building was a key component to the design as is the ongoing remote monitoring, maintenance and support to ensure maximum efficiency with limited downtime.
